Pub of the Week: Coach & Horses, London
Established in 1744, the Coach and Horses in Hill Street is Mayfair’s oldest surviving pub and traditional in both atmosphere and appearance. Grade II listed, it is very much a proper pub and many original features survive, both inside and out. The pub cellar is more than two hundred years old.
As the name suggests, the pub was originally built as a coaching inn. But where once it catered to weary travellers, the mix of today’s clientele reflects the diverse nature of the surrounding streets, so expect fashion designers and antique dealers to rub shoulders with tourists and locals.
Food is served Monday until Friday from 12 noon to 3pm, and also from 6pm until 10pm.
The lunch menu features a range of sandwiches, burgers and pizzas, in addition to a number of more hearty pub favourites. These include Whitstable Bay battered cod, Cumberland sausages and mash, and chicken, Wiltshire ham and leek pie.
The evening menu majors on stonebaked pizza, including a number of vegetarian options. Light bites such as fries and onion rings are also available.
Drinks being served at the bar include Five Grain Lager, Whitstable Bay Blonde Lager, Bear Island East Coast Pale Ale, Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Birra Moretti, San Miguel and Amstel. Cask ales on draught are Spitfire Amber Ale and Whitstable Bay Pale Ale.
Also available are Guinness and Orchard View Cider, in addition to an extensive range of gins, vodkas and malt whiskies. Cocktails are also available.
Pub opening hours are Monday through to Friday, 11am until 11pm. The pub is closed at the weekend but is available for private hire. For more information visit the pub's website.
