From City Commuter to Country Pub Landlord
A high flying City worker has abandoned a gruelling commute to become his own boss as licensee of a country pub. Stephen Rowley, 40, worked in publishing in London for more than 15 years, commuting daily from his home in Sevenoaks.
In the past few months he has completely transformed his life, however, moving down to the picturesque market town of Wadhurst with wife Lorraine and their children to take over the Best Beech Inn, owned by Shepherd Neame.
Stephen said:
Last year Lorraine and I began talking about making a change so I could spend more time with the family. I was tired of the corporate environment and spending hours on a train, and we wanted to do something for ourselves. Lorraine and I have both worked in pubs on and off since we were 18, and always loved it, so we decided to find one to run. When we saw the Best Beech it just ticked every box, as it was a beautiful traditional pub in a lovely rural setting.
The pub also has six bedrooms to let, and Shepherd Neame spent more than £60,000 last year fully refurbishing the accommodation, which comprises four double rooms, one single and one family. Stephen works as front-of-house, with Lorraine looking after accommodation and administration.
They have appointed a new head chef, Darren Sourour from Crowborough, who previously worked at The Mount Edgcumbe restaurant in Tunbridge Wells.
Stephen and Lorraine have worked with him to create a new menu of pub classics and bar snacks, along with daily specials influenced by the seasonal produce available. Food will be available from 12noon to 2pm and 6pm to 9pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and from 12noon to 4pm on Sunday, with the kitchen closed on Monday.
Stephen said:
We are both so glad we made the change. Shepherd Neame have supported us every step of the way, providing us with training in areas such as cellar management and health and safety, which has been a fantastic help. Our 19-year-old son Jaymes and 18-year-old daughter Georgia have both been coming back from university at weekends to help out which has been lovely, as it really feels like we are working together as a family.
He added:
As parents ourselves, we want this to be a family-oriented pub where children are welcome, with dogs welcome in the bar as well. Our goal is to create a hub for the community, where everyone feels comfortable.
Shepherd Neame’s director of retail and tenanted operations Nigel Bunting said:
With its great location and traditional charm, The Best Beech Inn has lots to offer, and we are delighted to welcome Stephen and Lorraine to help the pub fulfil its potential.
