Pub of the Week: Ye Olde Beverlie, Canterbury
Ye Olde Beverlie is an attractive traditional pub next to St Stephen’s Green in Canterbury. The pub retains period features such as an original stone floor, beams and open fireplace, complemented with a modern twist, giving the pub a warm, welcoming feel.
Only 10 minutes’ walk from the University of Kent, the pub is popular with the local community as well as visitors who seek it out for its Mexican food and English grills. It is a sister pub to The Albion in Faversham.
The team here are passionate about their food. You can expect big, colourful, hearty food, in large portions, freshly prepared from local ingredients. The team’s aim is to provide a friendly environment, where you can relax with friends while they prepare you a sumptuous Mexican feast – you definitely won’t go home from Ye Olde Beverlie feeling hungry.
Start with dishes such as spicy prawns in a sticky chilli, garlic, lime and coriander sauce, crispy paprika whitebait, or classic nachos. Go on to enjoy your choice of fajita, served on a sizzling skillet with warm floury tortillas and all the sides, opt for a burger or Kentish steak, or choose from mains such as devilled crab or Mexican ribs.
If you prefer things less spicy, there is a host of traditional English dishes to choose from too, such as ham and eggs, bangers and mash, and steak and ale pie. On Sundays they also offer an excellent traditional roast.
The pub offers a choice of quality cask ales, lagers and cider, as well as an excellent wine list including champagne and sparkling wines.
There is a pleasant large garden and courtyard and popular regular events include quiz and gourmet nights. The pub is also thought to be the birthplace of pub garden game bat and trap, which can still be played here – just call ahead and they’ll set it up for you to have a go.
Ye Olde Beverlie has a separate restaurant and function room.
