Pub of the Week: The Plough, Upper Dicker
The Plough, nestled at the heart of Upper Dicker village, East Sussex, is a traditional 17th century pub serving real ales and excellent pub food.
The historic building is steeped in history, retaining many period touches and interesting features, such as an external window in an internal wall – a result of an extension many years ago, recently discovered and incorporated into the pub as it is today.
In the winter months you can settle down and warm up in front of one of the log fires, and in the summer there is a large country garden to enjoy, with a safe play area for children.
The Plough is well known for its excellent food, and was also named ‘Pub Restaurant of the Year’ at the Shepherd Neame Awards 2015. All meals are prepared with seasonal produce, locally sourced where possible, and freshly prepared and cooked from scratch by the pub’s chefs. The best quality meats and vegetables arrive daily from local farms, and even the sauces are home prepared.
The mouth-watering menu, served all day every day from noon, is extensive and imaginative, with everything from pub classics like Pie & Mash (with seasonal vegetables and a red wine jus) to Plough Specials such as a Braised Half Shoulder of Lamb with a herb crust, or Local Game and Bacon Casserole. Vegetarians aren’t forgotten either, with choices such as Goat’s Cheese and Beetroot Risotto. There is also an excellent choice of children’s dishes, lunchtime sandwiches, desserts, teas and coffees.
On the bar you will find a choice of quality cask ales such as Spitfire, as well as guest bitter Harvey’s Best, along with a choice of lagers, cider, a good selection of wines, and all your other favourites.
The pub is well positioned for the Weald Way, an 80 mile walking route that passes through three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so why not plan a walk with a stop off at The Plough for a well-deserved pint and pub lunch?
If you fancy something a little less strenuous, the pub is also convenient for combining with a visit to the nearby Michelham Priory for a stroll around the historic house and beautiful grounds.
The Plough also runs a weekly quiz night on Tuesday evenings, and hosts live music on Friday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes.
If you are looking for somewhere to hold an event, the pub can cater for all functions and parties, including weddings. If you’re planning a Christmas meal or party, the pub’s festive menus can be found on the website, but don’t delay, spaces are limited and filling up fast! You can also join them for New Year’s Eve from 7.30pm, for a buffet and music.
