Pub of the Week: The Old Doctor Butler's Head

The Old Doctor Butlers Head, named after the court physician to James I, is a traditional pub in the heart of the City with a rich history and reputation for warm hospitality spanning four centuries. You’ll find it tucked away down an alley, close to St Paul's Cathedral and not far from the Tower of London.

Dr William Butler was in fact unqualified, having failing to succeed at Cambridge, but still he was appointed as physician to King James I. He was known for his outrageous cures, such as plunging plague victims into iced water, or dropping patients through a trapdoor on London Bridge into the Thames. The Doctor also sold a medicinal ale, available from taverns which displayed his head on their signs – this is where the pub gets its name from, and is believed to be the last remaining.

The bar, restaurant and function room offer a wide choice of traditional English food, cask ales, international lagers and wines in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The menu offers a delicious selection of pub favourites with a modern twist, including classics such as the ODBH Steak and Kidney Suet Pudding, Rosemary, Balsamic & Chilli glazed lamb cutlets, fish dishes such as Grilled Salmon with a caper buerre blanc, vegetarian choices and specials of the day.

The pub has Sky TV with several screens showing most sports.  Although the pub is closed to the public on Saturdays and Sundays the whole premises may be hired for private functions at the weekend, including wedding receptions, parties and meetings.
