Pub of the Week: The Monument, Canterbury
The Monument is an historic 19th Century pub in St Dunstan’s street, just a couple of minutes’ walk from Canterbury City Centre.
The pub enjoyed a major refurbishment at the end of last year which included a full redecoration and new furniture inside and out, giving the pub a smart new contemporary look. Inside, there are wooden floors, areas of exposed brick, and a variety of brewing related pictures and artefacts. There is even a table made out of an old hop press! For warmer days, the pub has a large garden and decked patio area to the rear.
Food is now served, with a good range of traditional pub meals now on offer, as well as platters, snacks and smaller plates. If we popped over today we would probably tuck into the Seafood Platter of calamari, whitebait and wholetail scampi served with chunky chips, salad and garlic mayonnaise. They are also making a name for themselves with their excellent burgers, including the cheese and bacon topped ‘Monumental’ – all the delicious options are served in brioche buns with chips and coleslaw.
On the bar you will find a good range of quality draught beers, wines and spirits. There is also an extensive cocktail menu, featuring 43 different drinks, many devised by expert mixologist and bar manager Jonjo. Pop in for a ‘Purple People Eater’ or the popular ‘Monument Iced Tea’. For groups, the Monument offers a ‘Cocktail Masterclass’ – a fun evening learning how to make some of the most drinkable combos – ideal for a birthday party or hen do with a difference. Call the pub for available dates and to find out more.
Whether you are looking for a midweek lunch, evening meal with friends, or somewhere to settle in for the night, The Monument is well worth a visit. It is also available for private hire for events such as birthdays, wedding receptions, business meetings etc, with a choice of buffet menus catered to suit your budget.
