Pub of the Week: The Duke of Wellington, Belgravia
The Duke of Wellington is a cosy and inviting traditional British pub tucked away behind Sloane Square and the Kings Road, not far from Victoria coach and rail stations.
The 19th century pub was originally built as a reading room for local residents, who went there to read the morning newspapers, but it is reported that locals said they’d rather have liquid refreshment than reading matter, and they won the day!
Today the pub is simply laid out, with a horseshoe bar, with tables and cosy booths around it. The pub has an open fire in winter, and is a suntrap in the summer with seating outside for relaxed eating and drinking, and watching the world go by.
On the menu, you will find a range of good quality, freshly prepared traditional pub meals, such as beer-battered cod and chips, or steak and Spitfire ale pie, plus light bites, burgers and sandwiches, as well as daily specials from the blackboard.
On the bar, you will find a range of well kept, quality cask ales, a choice of international lagers, ciders, and wines from around the world.
The ‘Duke of Boots’, as it is known, is popular with a wide range of clientele, from visitors looking for an authentic British pub lunch, to locals who seek it out for its welcoming, ‘down to earth’ atmosphere, and even the occasional celebrity looking for somewhere to enjoy a quiet pint. The pub has Sky TV for sports fans wanting to catch the match.
