UNDERDOG ESSEX GOLF CLUB SCOOP PRESTIGIOUS TROPHY
An Essex golf club supported by Shepherd Neame has won the prestigious Leslie Wood Essex Golf Trophy.
Royal Epping Forest Golf Club entered the annual Leslie F. Wood Championship back in April, playing through knockout rounds, with 64 teams battling it out for the eponymous trophy.
First played for in 1925, the Leslie Wood Essex Golf Trophy has been won by Royal Epping Forest Golf Club on three occasions, the first on its inauguration in 1925, and most recently after this in 1976. The Trophy is recognised throughout golf clubs in Essex as a much-respected tournament.
The Golf Club itself opened in 1888, with the historic grounds dating back to the time of King Henry VIII. Situated just 11 miles from London, the course offers a challenging 6,000 plus yards, with a variety of tree-lined fairways and closely cropped greens to entice all golfers. The club has a long-standing partnership with independent family brewer Shepherd Neame.
Club Captain Tony Griffin said: “We are grateful for the support Shepherd Neame has provided over the years, helping our small golf club win this prestigious trophy against all the odds!
“Compared to other local clubs we have a small membership, but have successfully won the Leslie Wood Trophy thanks to the support of Shepherd Neame, helping our Club survive through some very hard times.”
Business Development Manager Dougie Dick said: “We are proud to support Royal Epping Forest Golf Club, one of only 35 Royal-titled clubs in the UK and Ireland.
“It is a pleasure working with Tony and the team, and we would like to congratulate them on their incredible achievement!”
