WEDDING BELLS RING OUT AT ISLE OF SHEPPEY PUB
Romance is blossoming at The Aviator pub in Sheerness after it recently became licensed for weddings.
The popular Shepherd Neame pub on the Isle of Sheppey received its licence to hold civil ceremonies in June, after a long-held ambition became a reality for licensee Caroline Kennedy.
Caroline, who has been at the pub since 2018 with partner Kevin Burgess, had thought the premises would be perfect for nuptials for several years.
She said: “The Aviator is such a pretty building, we thought this would be a great place for a wedding venue. I’ve actually been thinking about it for several years. We got our licence in June and then held our very first wedding in September.”
It has meant some changes to the outside of the pub at Queenborough Corner to ensure the venue is suitable. An area of unused grass has been replaced by blocked paving to accommodate the 30ft x 40ft marquee which saw 150 wedding guests party the night away last month. There is also a new, attractive wrought iron gate for the happy couple to step through into the garden.
Caroline added: “It feels like a completely new building and a new start for us. We have gone in a very different direction.”
They also now have access to a number of classic and vintage wedding cars to convey wedding parties to their destination - ranging from a 1935 Austin 30 Limo to a Daimler and a Bentley.
Caroline added: “As word of mouth has begun to spread, wedding enquiries have grown, and we have already taken a number of bookings for next year. We also plan to hold a wedding fair next spring to showcase what is on offer.”
The Aviator is open seven days a week, from 4pm to 10pm on Mondays; noon to 10pm Tuesdays to Thursdays; noon to 11pm Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 10pm on Sundays. It serves food every day, with pizzas a speciality following the recent addition of a traditional wood fired pizza oven.
