Pub of the Week: The White Horse, Hawkinge
There has been a hostelry on the site of today’s White Horse Inn since the late 17th century, and more than three hundred years on today’s pub, which dates from the 1800s, continues to offer fine hospitality.
With a real fire burning during the winter months, and a sun trap garden for when the weather is more agreeable, this really is a pub for all seasons.
The pub reopened in November following a major £200,000 refurbishment, since when it has won rave reviews for its food, a mixture of traditional pub dishes and daily specials.
The lunch menu features an extensive range of main dishes, including a number of breakfast options, ham, egg and chips, traditional fish and chips and a classic mac ‘n’ cheese. Also available are a range of baguettes and paninis.
The evening menu ranges from a number of starters, including whitebait and prawn cocktail, through to main dishes such as Thai fish cakes, hunter’s chicken, Lancashire hotpot and liver and bacon. A separate grill menu features ribs, several different burger options and a variety of steaks. Dishes can be prepared for children in smaller portion sizes, at half price, and there are also a number of vegetarian options.
Pouring at the bar you will find an extensive selection of premium lagers and classic cask ales from Britain’s oldest brewer.
