Pub of the Week: Fish on the Green, Bearsted
Located on one of England’s prettiest village greens, the Fish on The Green has been winning plaudits for its food and welcoming customers through its doors for many years now.
Rated one of Kent’s best seafood restaurants, it is both listed in the Michelin Guide and also the proud owner of two AA Rosettes.
Occupying what was once the adjacent stable block to the Oak on The Green pub, a former coaching inn which continues to thrive next door, at the Fish on the Green the emphasis is on food, and fresh seafood in particular, much of which is sourced from Chapmans of Sevenoaks.
The building has undergone a complete renovation and the interior today is stylish but simple, offering a light and airy dining area and a small bar where pre-dinner drinks can be enjoyed.
A small but well thought-out lunch menu features starters such as pan fried herring on sourdough toast with mustard butter and crispy salmon fishcakes with a smoked paprika mayonnaise. Mains include roasted fillet of hake, grilled fillet of red gurnard and fish and chips.
The more extensive A La Carte menu includes a wide range of starters, among them half a dozen Jersey Rock oyster, seared Scottish scallops, roasted king prawns and a cumin spice mackerel fillet. Among the choice of main dishes are a roasted fillet of halibut, whole grilled lemon sole and a whole lobster thermidor.
There are a number of non-fish dishes on the menu, including for meat eaters a ham hock terrine, pan roasted fillet of beef and roast rump of lamb. There are several vegetarian options too, among them a goat’s cheese and asparagus tart.
Wines from Kent vineyard Hush Heath Estate are included on an interesting list, while beers include Whitstable Bay Pale Ale and Curious Brew Lager.
