Pub of the Week: The Cock Horse, Hildenborough
Henry VII was on the throne when the Cock Horse first opened its doors in the early 16th century, and this classic English village pub has been serving the people of Hildenborough ever since.
For many years it was a coaching inn and the pub’s name was inspired by the heavy horses that would once have helped pull the coaches up a steep nearby hill. The original stables still stand adjacent today, although were long ago converted into cottages. Inside you will find a list of every landlord to serve at the pub since 1511.
There is a picturesque garden area, and when the weather demands it a real fire can be found roaring away inside. Low beamed ceilings and exposed brickwork add to the charm, and the Cock Horse is popular with walkers. Well behaved dogs are also welcome.
The pub enjoys a good reputation for its freshly cooked menu of traditional pub grub. Hearty mains include ham, egg and chips, fish and chips, lasagne, a selection of burgers and a range of traditional pies.
Lighter dishes include a variety of sandwiches prepared to order, while the pub’s Sunday roast is enduringly popular.
At the bar the Cock Horse carries an extensive range which includes Spitfire Lager, Hurlimann Helles and the Italian lager Birra Moretti. Master Brew Kentish Ale is also available, in addition to Orchard View Cider and Guinness.
There is also a varied wine list and an extensive range of bottled beers and cider.
Christmas bookings at the Cock Horse are now being taken.
