As it starts to get colder outside, there are few things better than heading to a cosy pub for a traditional Sunday roast. Here are 10 of our favourites. Due to their popularity, booking is strongly advised.

1. The Alma, Painter's Forstal

The Alma has been serving the pretty village of Painters Forstal since 1837 and these days also caters to visiting walkers and cyclists. Its traditional Sunday roast remains enduringly popular, with all meat and vegetables sourced locally. On offer are free range chicken, topside of beef and loin of pork, all served with a full compliment of veg, homemade Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Both gluten free and vegetarian roasts are also available, while smaller children’s portions can be ordered.

The Bell, Smarden

2. The Bell, Smarden

This delightful village inn, set in historic Smarden, can trace its roots back to the 16th Century and its oak beams, Kentish peg-tiled roof and open fire ensures bags of old world character. Locally sourced meat is used in the traditional Sunday roast, which is served with seasonal vegetables and Yorkshire pudding. Meats are cooked medium rare, unless otherwise requested. A separate children’s menu is available.

3. The Britannia, Guildford

Sitting on the banks of the River Wey, the Britannia boasts ‘the best roast in Guildford’ and it comes as no surprise that the pub’s Sunday lunch offering is much acclaimed with a host of five-star reviews to its credit. Featuring freshly carved and locally sourced meat, served with all the traditional trimmings, it is very popular so advanced booking is highly recommended.

The Crown Inn, Keston

4. The Crown Inn, Keston

Although located only a short drive from busy Bromley, the Crown Inn enjoys a bucolic setting in the pretty village of Keston. The pub’s traditional Sunday roast has many admirers and options include sirloin of beef, rump of lamb or roasted chicken supreme. The intrepid diner can try all of them with the three meat super roast. Meat is soured from Scottish butcher Donald Russell, who have a Royal Warrant. For vegans there is a nut, lentil, spinach and mushroom option. All are served with Yorkshire puddings, seasonal vegetables and homemade gravy.

5. The Dog & Bear, Lenham

Situated in the leafy Kent market village of Lenham, the historic Dog and Bear enjoys a fine reputation for the quality of its food, including a sumptuous traditional Sunday roast. Beef, lamb and pork are always available, and sometimes turkey too. All meat is sourced from local butcher Joseph and Henry, while vegetables come from nearby RJ Kingsland. For vegetarians there is a nut roast option while both veggie gravy and gluten free gravy are available on request.

New Flying Horse, Wye

6. The New Flying Horse, Wye

Located in the shadow of the Kent Downs, the New Flying Horse is a classic country pub offering a delicious menu. This includes a hearty Sunday roast, featuring a choice of hand carved meats and all the traditional trimmings. There is also a vegetable nut roast option, served with roast potatoes and a tarragon and mushroom sauce.

7. The Ostrich, Colnbrook

In addition to serving its full main menu selection, on Sunday a traditional roast is also available at this popular pub, once a coaching inn. Offering a variety of different meats alongside all the traditional accompaniments, many of the ingredients are sourced in Kent. This family-friendly venue can also supply pens and paper to keep young children occupied. Booking is advised.

8. The Sun Inn, Faversham

On Sunday at the Sun there are three choices of roast available, usually beef and lamb which is alternated with chicken, turkey and pork. The meat comes from local butcher JC Rook and Sons while vegetables are sourced from RJ Kingsland of Maidstone. All roasts come with vegetables, homemade Yorkshire pudding and gravy.

9. The Tudor Rose, Borden

With a history that can be traced back to around 1750, the Tudor Rose is an old pub with bags of character and a good reputation for its food, in particular its weekend carvery. There are usually up to four different meats available, beef, ham, turkey and pork, all served with the traditional trimmings. Most ingredients are locally sourced.

The Wharf, Dartford

10. The Wharf, Dartford

With wonderful views over Cotton Lake, and convenient for the Dartford Crossing, the Wharf is a unique venue for Sunday lunch. On offer is a selection of roast meats, all served with roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and homemade Yorkshire pudding. There are a number of vegetarian options, including a delicious chickpea, sweet potato and spinach curry.
