FRESH LOOK FOR THE DOVER CASTLE
A 17th Century coaching inn has reopened following a £470,000 programme of renovation and refurbishment.
The Dover Castle, on the A2 between Faversham and Sittingbourne, has been welcoming visitors since the 1640s and while retaining its historic character now caters to the needs of the 21st Century traveller.
Speaking at the official opening on Tuesday 10/10/17, Shepherd Neame chief executive Jonathan Neame said:
“Our investment in the Dover Castle represents our commitment to providing our customers with great eating and drinking experiences in unique and characterful settings.”
The Dover Castle is being run by husband and wife team Stuart and Kelly George who also run the Tudor Rose at Borden.
Kelly said:
“This is a family-run restaurant and bar, our food is locally sourced and freshly cooked to order and we look forward to welcoming customers old and new.”
The interior space has been opened up to create a new layout with seating for up to 90 diners, along with complete redecoration and the installation of a new bar.
Outside, a new terrace has been created for alfresco dining and the garden remodeled to include a children’s play area, while the car park has been extended to accommodate up to 50 cars.
The first official pint at the newly re-opened Dover Castle was poured by local celebrity Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne, five-time winner of the British Superbike Championship.
The opening was also marked by the donation of £1,000 to the charity Elizabeth’s Brain Tumour Journey, which aims to raise money for local girl Elizabeth ‘Lizzy’ Adams, 13, who has a life-threatening brain tumour. A GoFundMe page has been set up in the same name for those who wish to donate to the cause.
