Pub of the Week: William the Conqueror, Rye
The William the Conqueror is situated in the historic town of Rye, close to the harbour. It is the perfect place to relax over lunch and a pint, and watch the world go by.
Inside, the pub is looking very smart after its recent extensive refurbishment, with attractive nautical touches to the décor, and a cosy real fire in winter. Outside, there is seating to the front of the pub, perfect for dining al fresco on sunnier days.
The pub is known for its quality real ales, and has featured in the Good Pub Guide. There is also a good choice of wines and spirits, plus soft drinks, teas and coffee.
The pub’s exciting new menu offers traditional hearty pub food as well as familiar dishes from around the world, with an emphasis on fresh fish dishes and Greek specialities, such as a delicious homemade Moussaka, and a very tasty Chicken Souvlaki. There are good vegetarian choices, gluten free options, and a children’s menu. On Sundays they serve a popular homemade roast (booking advised).
Rye itself is a beautiful place to visit, with its cobbled streets, antique and independent shops, cafes and sites of historic interest.
The pub hosts regular music nights. Coming up they have the ever popular Michael Buble Tribute, with Jason Allen on 22nd September, Sonny & the Harp on 20th October and an Elvis tribute night with Nicky Hart on 24th November, all at 8.30pm. Full details on Facebook.
The pub recently received ‘Tenanted Pub of the Year’ at the Shepherd Neame Pub Awards 2017 in recognition of the hard work put in by the licensees, including their popular new menu and inventive ideas for improving the customer experience, which have contributed to making the pub a real success.
They are now taking bookings for Christmas – you can view the menu online here.
