Pub of the Week: The Artichoke, Chartham
Set in the heart of Chartham village, just 4 miles from the beautiful cathedral city of Canterbury, is The Artichoke, a traditional village pub built in the 15th century.
Inside, the bar is full of character, with oak beams and exposed brickwork, and a real fire roars in the corner in winter. There’s also a very special feature in the restaurant – a well has been sealed with a glass top and is used as a table that can seat up to 9 diners.
Outside, there’s a large enclosed garden with ample seating for customers to enjoy a drink and some food in the warmer weather.
Food is served here all week – dinner is available on Mondays, lunch and dinner is available from Tuesdays to Saturdays, and a traditional roast lunch is available on Sundays. During the week, diners can enjoy great pub food for lunch including homemade beef and Master Brew pie, beer battered cod and chips, and Cumberland sausage and mash. The evening menu includes steaks, lamb and confit duck leg. The Artichoke also offers a takeaway menu during kitchen hours.
For entertainment, The Artichoke hosts a pub quiz once a month, with half the entry fee going to charity. Traditional pub pursuits like darts, bat and trap, dominoes, cards and board games are all available.
The pub is a popular destination for ramblers looking to relax and unwind after enjoying the Chartham circular walk, which follows the beautiful Stour Valley Walk before joining the North Downs Way.
