Pub of the Week: The Alma, near Faversham
The Alma is a traditional pub in the picturesque village of Painter’s Forstal, just 2 miles from the medieval market town of Faversham.
A public house since 1837, The Alma was originally called the Candle House because the landlord would light candles at night to show thirsty hop pickers the way to the pub for some hard-earned refreshment.
That warm welcome continues today, and is extended to dogs, who are welcome in both the public bar and the garden.
Inside, The Alma is everything that you would expect from a traditional village pub, with wooden floors and wooden furnishings. Outside, the garden provides a safe space for children to play, with traditional ‘Bat and Trap’ for the adults, too. Just ask the staff for a bat and ball!
Food is served at The Alma from noon until 2:30pm, and 7pm to 9:30pm Mondays-Saturdays, and between noon and 4pm on Sundays. The menu includes old favourites such as homemade steak and kidney pudding, fish and chips served with homemade tartare sauce, and homemade rump steak burgers. The restaurant here can seat 45 people, and the pub offers weekly Lunchtime Specials, serving 2 courses for £9.50 and 3 courses for £12.95.
Special dietary requirements are catered for as standard at The Alma – gluten-free bread, rolls and pasta are always on offer and the menu includes a number of gluten-free and vegetarian dishes. It may also be possible to adapt some other dishes to accommodate particular requirements.
The Alma is a popular venue for private functions, including birthday parties and club events, with both sit down meals in the restaurant and homemade buffet food on offer, tailored to your requirements.
The pub is the hub of the community in Painter's Forstal, and plays host to regular events such as pub quizzes and live music performances as well as occasional Murder Mystery and Psychic evenings.
