Pub of the Week: 'Meet the Landlord' at the Three Tuns, Faversham
Your name and age: Pauline Reynolds, 53
How long have you run your pub and what is your background in the business? I have run the pub for 10 years. I was a tour guide for Shepherd Neame brewery for eight and a half years before that.
The best thing about running a Shepherd Neame pub is? My husband Stephen and I were both born in Faversham, so it is great running a pub in the town where we know so many people. We love the social side of it. This pub is particularly special as it was built in 1605 and was one of the very first pubs bought by Shepherd Neame, around 1730. It is Grade II listed with lots of historic features such as its oak beams.
Why did you enter the pub business? I knew the Three Tuns well, as I used to play for the pub’s darts team more than 30 years ago, and was friends with the previous licensee. I really enjoyed the bar work involved with my job as a tour guide for Shepherd Neame, and had always liked the idea of running a traditional community pub like the Three Tuns. When it became available, I decided to go for it.
What’s the most memorable moment since you’ve been licensee? Each day is different, which is one of the things I love about being a licensee. Definitely some of the most memorable moments have taken place during our annual breast cancer fundraiser, Dare To Wear Pink. All the staff and customers dress up for the evening and it is always a fun event.
Any particular ales you wish to highlight? We pride ourselves on offering a well-kept Master Brew.
The Three Tuns is a popular and historic Faversham town pub, reputed to be the base from which Admiral Lord Nelson recruited and paid his crew! The pub has a strong sense of community, supporting a darts and pool team. There is also a petanque court in the garden.
