Pub of the Week: The Freemasons Arms, Covent Garden
The Freemasons Arms in Long Acre, Covent Garden is the self-professed spiritual home of the Football Association.
The pioneers of soccer met at the original Freemasons pub over six evenings in the autumn of 1863 to decide the rules of our nation’s most popular sport, one which is now played in more than 200 countries across the globe.
To celebrate this association, the pub displays a collection of football memorabilia, and is the ideal place to watch today’s football, with six high definition plasma TV screens, and the ability to show two games simultaneously when the need arises.
Situated just a few hundred yards from Covent Garden tube and a short walk from Charing Cross, the pub is the perfect central spot for meeting friends for lunch or to watch the match, and also has two well-equipped function rooms for occasions such as wedding receptions, christenings, training courses or business meetings.
Featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, the pub serves a variety of authentic Kentish cask ales, as well as distinctive international lagers and a good selection of wines.
The Freemason’s Arms can cater for more than 250 diners, both in the bar and in a separate dining room. The menu features a wide selection of traditional meals, including pub classics, burgers and substantial sandwiches. All are freshly-prepared on the premises, using seasonal, home-produced ingredients whenever possible.
