Pub of the Week: The Star Inn, Guildford
The Star Inn is one of the oldest pubs in Guildford, nestled in the city centre, and has been welcoming the people of the town for over 400 years. As well as being one of the city’s most popular pubs, it is also proud to be the area’s longest running live music venue.
Inside, the pub retains many period features and most of its original layout. There is a spacious bar, plus a real fire and plenty of snug and cosy corners – the ideal place to settle in and relax with friends. In the evening the pub really comes alive, with the separate ‘Back Room’ venue playing host to all kinds of live music, entertainment and comedy.
The pub was recently announced winner of the ‘Best Customer Service’ award in the bars and pubs category at the Experience Guildford awards, in recognition of their commitment to providing the best possible service, and a friendly welcome, to all customers. They are also in the running to be the Surrey Advertiser’s Pub of the Year.
On the menu, you will find a range of traditional English pub dishes such as cod and chips, and steak and Spitfire ale pie, as well as sandwiches and light bites. The pub is particularly well known for its excellent burgers, which are served in a toasted brioche bun with your choice of toppings, coleslaw and chips. Food is served daily from 12pm to 7pm (4pm Sundays).
On the bar, you will find a range of quality cask ales, often including the new Spitfire Gold (please call ahead if making a special journey), as well as a choice of lagers, ciders and wines from around the world.
Being close to the shopping district, The Star is ideally situated for a shopper’s lunch, drinks with friends, or an evening’s entertainment in the ‘Back Room’; with a wealth of live music to choose from, plus film nights, stand-up comedy and more. You can find their currents events listing on their website. If you’re quick you can catch the last couple of days of their December adult panto, ‘Rub My Lamp’ presented by the Guildford Fringe Theatre – like a normal panto, but smuttier!
