Pub of the Week: The Jamaica Wine House, London
The Jamaica Wine House is a traditional British pub tucked away in St Michael’s Alley, one of the winding streets off Cornhill, in London’s historic ‘Square Mile’.
The Jamaica, or ‘Jampot’ as it is known locally, first opened in 1652, as London’s first coffee house. Today, it is popular with city workers and tourists alike, who come for post-work drinks, a satisfying pub lunch, or just to soak up some of the atmosphere in this bustling part of the capital.
At street level there is an attractive wood-panelled bar, with high ceilings and a variety of Victorian period features, including a 19th coffee bean roaster! Downstairs you will find Todd’s Wine Bar, the perfect location for a relaxed evening meal. On warmer evenings, you will find a gathering of city folk in the alley outside, chatting over a freshly pulled pint.
If you're feeling hungry, head downstairs to Todd’s, where you can choose from a selection of small plates to make your own sharing board, or enjoy dishes such as slow-cooked beef brisket, traditional ale-battered fish and chips, or a hearty steak burger, with an extensive selection of wines to complement your meal. Food is served all day from noon until 9pm. For a quick lunch, there is also a range of sandwiches and bar snacks available in the main bar from noon until 3pm.
On the bar, you will find a range of quality cask ales, as well as international lagers, cider and wines by the glass or bottle.
The Jamaica Wine House is open Monday to Friday, but closed at the weekends, when the pub is available for private hire for functions and events.
