Pub of the Week: The Shakespeare, Canterbury
The Shakespeare is a restaurant and bar nestled in the heart of the historic city of Canterbury, just a short stroll from the cathedral. Tucked away from the High Street in Butchery Lane, it’s a friendly place that loves food, wine and music, and takes the job of feeding you really quite seriously.
Built in 1504, the building was originally home to a Tudor playhouse. Extensively renovated in 2013, the building now blends its historic roots effortlessly with a smart, modern interior.
The Shakespeare provides an excellent eating experience, with something to suit all tastes and appetites – whether you fancy a quick sandwich, gourmet burger, or a three course meal, there is something here for everyone. Ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible, and carefully combined in such a way that even the most regular of dishes becomes something really quite special.
Choose from dishes such as British Chargrilled Lamb Steak, marinated in thyme and garlic, served with sweet mustard and bacon potatoes and fresh green salad. For burger lovers, their gourmet burgers are made with 100% Kentish beef, served in a toasted brioche bun, with your choice of toppings, alongside crisp coleslaw and chunky chips. Alternatively, order a bottle of wine and a butchers, seafood or veggie sharing board for relaxed nibbles with friends.
Adjoining the restaurant, you’ll find the Shakespeare wine bar, with a staggering 45+ wines to enjoy. Stroll through the court yard, or make your way to the Buttermarket wine bar entrance. Find an old favourite or discover something new, or if you’re undecided, choose a wine flight. Formal tastings with a sommelier can also be booked.
The Shakespeare hosts a variety of events, with everything from wine tastings to theatre performances in the courtyard! Gin lovers will enjoy their Gin Tasting Night, coming up on the 31st August, with gin sampling, a gin cocktail and nibbles, all for £15 per person. Limited availability.
